A Mexican mayoral candidate and five others were killed at a campaign event in Chiapas state.
A mayoral candidate was among six people fatally shot at a political campaign event in Chiapas, southern Mexico, on Thursday, according to the Institute of Elections and Citizen Participation (IEPC). Lucero López Maza, the mayoral candidate for La Concordia, was killed in what preliminary investigations suggest was a clash between armed civilians. Two others were injured, according to the Chiapas Attorney General’s Office. This incident occurs amid a surge in political violence across Mexico as the country approaches its largest election in history on June 2.
The Attorney General’s Office reported that among the victims were three women, one of whom was a minor, and three men, all of whom succumbed to gunshot wounds. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to identify and locate the perpetrators. The IEPC denounced the attack, stating that “such events instil fear and uncertainty among citizens” and could deter participation in the forthcoming election. Since the commencement of the electoral process in September 2023, an average of at least two individuals per day have experienced some form of political violence, according to the private consulting firm Integralia. Official government statistics indicate a lower figure.
Violence has escalated in the southern state, bordering Guatemala, as cartels vie for dominance over lucrative routes for migrant and drug smuggling. Earlier this week, eleven individuals were slain in mass shootings in the adjacent municipality of Chicomuselo, as reported by the state prosecutor. The Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel are embroiled in a territorial dispute in the region, prompting hundreds to evacuate their residences in January. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador conceded that the area has witnessed recent violent confrontations but asserted that the issue was being exaggerated.
