Body found in search for child missing in croc attack
Australian police have discovered human remains during the search for a missing 12-year-old child, believed to have fallen victim to a crocodile attack. The child was last seen on Tuesday, swimming with family near the remote Indigenous town of Nganmarriyanga, located approximately seven hours southwest of Darwin by car in the Northern Territory.
Senior Sergeant Erica Gibson stated, “This is devastating news for the family, the community, and everyone involved in the search,” adding that the police would support all those affected. Previously, Sergeant Gibson had informed ABC News that a black crocodile had been spotted in the vicinity.
Approximately 40 community members assisted police officers in the search for the child, which commenced immediately after the 12-year-old was reported missing. The search operation was conducted by land, water, and air using helicopters, covering challenging terrain with dense vegetation and winding waterways.
No details were provided regarding whether the crocodile suspected of attacking the child had been located. Earlier, Northern Territory Police Minister Brent Potter had stated that wildlife officers were authorized to “remove” the crocodile from the area once found, and reiterated the government’s safety message.
Saltwater crocodiles are commonly found along the northern edges of Australia, from Broome in Western Australia to Gladstone in Queensland. Although crocodiles were once hunted to near extinction, their numbers have rebounded since hunting was banned in the 1970s. Currently, the Northern Territory is home to an estimated 100,000 saltwater crocodiles, the highest concentration in the world. However, attacks remain relatively uncommon.
In the past year, there have been at least two reported crocodile attacks in the Northern Territory, though neither was fatal. The last fatal attack in the region occurred in 2018. However, Queensland has experienced several deadly attacks in recent years, including the case of a 16-year-old boy who lost his life in the Torres Strait in April. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by wildlife in Australia’s northern regions and underscores the importance of adhering to safety guidelines in crocodile areas.
