A left-wing alliance won the most seats in the French parliament, but with no absolute majority, France remains in political limbo.
In a surprising outcome, the New Popular Front (NFP) — an alliance of parties from the far-left France Unbowed to the more moderate Socialists and Ecologists — secured 182 seats in the National Assembly, becoming the largest group but falling short of the 289 needed for an absolute majority. Macron’s centrist Ensemble alliance won 163 seats, while Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) and its allies won 143 seats. The RN’s strong performance in the first round raised concerns about the potential election of France’s first far-right government since the Vichy regime of World War II. However, Sunday’s results show French voters’ strong desire to prevent the far right from gaining power, even if it means a hung parliament.
Cheers erupted on the streets of Paris as projected results indicated a leftist victory. Speaking to a jubilant crowd near Stalingrad square, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the fiery leader of France Unbowed, described the results as a “huge relief for the overwhelming majority of people in our country.” Meanwhile, Jordan Bardella, the far-right RN’s 28-year-old leader, remarked that France had been thrown into “uncertainty and instability.” Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, Macron’s protégé, announced he would resign on Monday morning, though his successor remains unclear. The results mean Macron might have to appoint someone from the left-wing coalition, a rare situation known as “cohabitation.” However, members of Macron’s party have repeatedly stated they would refuse to work with France Unbowed, viewing it as just as extreme and unfit to govern as the RN.
In a brief statement, the Elysee announced that Macron is awaiting the full results from all 577 constituencies “before taking the necessary decisions.” It added, “As guarantor of our institutions, the president will ensure that the sovereign choice of the French people is respected.” Édouard Philippe, France’s former prime minister and Macron ally, remarked that the president’s decision to call a snap election had led to “great uncertainty.” He stated, “The truth is that no political bloc in the assembly has a majority to govern on its own. The central political forces have a responsibility to remain and must, without compromise, promote the creation of an agreement to stabilise the political situation.”
