Damage was primarily to 141 factory buildings, with no residential collapses. Preliminary assessment rated the tornado at level three intensity, just below the highest level. Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, lies about 80 miles from Hong Kong. A weather station in Liangtian Village, Baiyun District, recorded a maximum wind gust of 20.6 meters per second, near the tornado’s path. Search and rescue operations concluded by 10 p.m. local time.

The Pearl River basin experiences annual flooding from April to September, but recent years have witnessed more severe rainstorms and floods. Scientists caution that the climate crisis will exacerbate extreme weather events, heightening their lethality and frequency. While tornadoes are less common in China compared to the United States, they do occur. According to a peer-reviewed study from 2015, China sees fewer than 100 tornadoes annually, resulting in at least 1,772 deaths over the past 50 years since 1961. The China Meteorological Administration predicts that heavy rainfall and intense storms will persist until the month’s end.
