At least 14 killed as billboard collapses in Mumbai during thunderstorm
At least 14 people died and dozens were injured when a massive billboard collapsed during a thunderstorm in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, local authorities reported. The billboard fell on houses and a petrol station near a busy road in Ghatkopar, an eastern suburb, after strong winds and rain late Monday (May 13). Scores of people were trapped, and rescue operations continued into early Tuesday. The thunderstorm also brought traffic to a standstill in parts of the city and disrupted operations at its airport, one of the country’s busiest.
Mumbai’s municipal corporation reported that at least 74 people were hospitalised with injuries following the accident, with 31 subsequently discharged. News channels and social media posts depicted the towering billboard swaying in the wind before collapsing to the ground. “The operation was highly challenging due to the weight of the structure and the presence of flammable liquid and gas at the site,” Mohsen Shahedi, a senior officer with the National Disaster Response Force, told Reuters.
The local weather department had forecasted moderate rain with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kilometres per hour (25-30 miles per hour) in parts of Mumbai on Monday. Temporary flight disruptions occurred at Mumbai airport, including 15 flight diversions and a suspension of operations for just over an hour, according to ANI news agency. Mumbai, like several other Indian cities, is prone to severe flooding and rain-related accidents during the monsoon season, which typically lasts from June to September each year.
