The Philippines reports that a ship was damaged in a fresh escalation in the South China Sea, allegedly caused by a Chinese water cannon.
In the South China Sea, Chinese coast guard vessels fired water cannons, damaging a Philippine ship on Tuesday, according to Philippine authorities. The incident unfolded during a patrol near Scarborough Shoal, controlled by China but situated within Manila’s exclusive economic zone. Video footage from the Philippine Coast Guard showed two large Chinese ships targeting the Philippine vessel with water cannons. Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela reported that four China Coast Guard vessels and six Chinese Maritime Militia vessels obstructed and engaged in dangerous manoeuvres with Philippine vessels. The Philippine ship sustained damage, but no injuries were reported. China Coast Guard expelled the Philippine vessels, citing legal grounds.
Despite an international court ruling against it, Beijing claims almost complete ownership of the South China Sea. China has progressively occupied remote reefs and atolls in the region over the last two decades, constructing military installations like runways and ports. Scarborough Shoal, also known as Huangyan Island or Bajo de Masinloc, holds strategic importance as a reef and fishing ground. Although devoid of structures, China has maintained a continuous coast guard presence since 2012, according to the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative. Recently, the Philippines accused China of installing a 380-metre floating barrier, blocking access to the area. This incident adds to ongoing tensions in the disputed South China Sea, where territorial disputes between the nations persist.
About 200 kilometres (125 miles) off the Philippine island of Palawan lies a shoal that gained significance in the 1990s when the Philippines grounded the ageing World War II-era transport ship, the BRP Sierra Madre, there to reinforce its territorial claim. Now a rusted wreck, it’s manned by rotating marines. Responding, the China Coast Guard asserted on Weibo that it had taken “lawful control measures” against Philippine vessels, which it accused of “illegally entering the waters adjacent to Ren’ai Reef,” or Second Thomas Shoal. In March, a Chinese water cannon struck a Philippine resupply boat en route to Second Thomas Shoal, causing damage and injuring four Filipino sailors.
