Recent flash floods in northern Afghanistan have claimed at least 300 lives, with widespread devastation across provinces like Badakhshan, Ghor, Baghlan, and Herat. Nearly 2,000 homes have been damaged, according to the International Organisation for Migration. The World Food Programme is distributing fortified biscuits to survivors, noting the floods as part of a series triggered by heavy rainfall. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is preparing emergency responses for thousands of stranded individuals across seven affected provinces. IRC Afghanistan director Salma Ben Aissa underscores the gravity of the situation, labelling it a major humanitarian emergency compounded by earlier earthquakes and flooding.
Save the Children reported that over half of the 600,000 flood-affected individuals are children. They’re sending a “clinic on wheels” with mobile health and child protection teams to assist families. In Baghlan province, Reuters captured mourners burying flood victims on Saturday. Gulbudeen, a local resident, recounted losing five family members in the deluge. Meanwhile, in Laqayi village, AFP footage showed residents clearing mud from their homes. The deep pools of mud caused extensive damage to dwellings, with villagers seen wading through the aftermath of the disaster.
In a statement on X, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid acknowledged the tragic toll of the floods, expressing condolences for the loss of lives and injuries. The Taliban has directed its interior ministry, disaster management ministry, and local officials to “use all available resources” to rescue those stranded, recover dead bodies, and provide medical treatment to the injured, Mujahid added. These floods compound recent natural disasters in the region, including April’s rainfall and floods that killed over 100 people and swept away dozens in July. Additionally, a powerful earthquake in the western part of Afghanistan claimed thousands of lives less than three months ago.
