Fresh eruptions from Mount Ruang in remote Indonesia prompted evacuations and flight cancellations this week. Smoke, lava, and gases spewed from the 725-metre volcano, causing concern for nearby residents and air traffic. Indonesia’s volcanology agency issued its highest alert after three eruptions on Tuesday, warning of potential tsunamis. Ruang, near Tagulandang island, has prompted evacuation orders for over 12,000 people. The National Disaster Management Authority footage displays crowds awaiting evacuation amid towering ash plumes. PVMBG raised alerts on Tuesday, advising mask usage and caution due to ongoing eruptions and earthquakes. Seven nearby airports, including Sam Ratulangi International Airport, closed. BNPB closed nearby schools to shield children from volcanic ash, showcasing dramatic ash cascades on Thursday.
Mount Ruang, a stratovolcano with steep, conical slopes, often erupts explosively due to the slow movement of thick lava, as noted by volcanologists. Its ash has now drifted into eastern Malaysian airspace, monitored closely by Malaysia’s meteorological department. Responding to this, Air Asia has cancelled 21 flights, advising affected passengers, particularly those travelling between Malaysia and Indonesia, to check for updates via email and phone notifications. Muhammad Helmi Abdullah, Met Malaysia chief, assured continuous monitoring and pledged to issue aviation weather warnings if necessary.
“Air Asia is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates on the latest developments.” Malaysia Airlines, the national carrier, issued similar travel advisories on Wednesday after cancelling several flights in the area. Indonesia, a Southeast Asian archipelago with 270 million people, sits along the Ring of Fire and boasts over 120 active volcanoes, more than anywhere else in the world. Mount Ruang erupted in April, disrupting over 200 flights on April 18 and 19, affecting tens of thousands of passengers. Hundreds living nearby were evacuated due to fears of a partial collapse into the sea, which could trigger a tsunami as it did in 1871.
