การปะทุดังกล่าวเกิดขึ้นเพียงไม่นานหลังจากสำนักงานธรณีวิทยาอินโดนีเซียประกาศเตือนเมื่อค่ำวันที่ 18 พฤษภาคม ว่ามีแนวโน้มสูงที่จะเกิดการปะทุขนาดใหญ่ โดยได้แนะนำให้ประชาชนหลีกเลี่ยงพื้นที่ในรัศมี 6 กิโลเมตรจากปากปล่อง และสวมหน้ากากเพื่อป้องกันเถ้าภูเขาไฟที่กระจายอยู่ในอากาศ รวมถึงระวังภัยจาก “ลาฮาร์” หรือโคลนภูเขาไฟ หากเกิดฝนตกในพื้นที่โดยรอบ

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Erupts Violently, Indonesia Raises Alert to Highest Level
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, located on the island of Flores in Indonesia, erupted violently on May 19, with two explosions sending ash clouds soaring more than 1.2 kilometers above the summit. According to Indonesia’s Volcanology Agency, the eruptions occurred shortly after midnight and again at 9:36 AM, prompting authorities to immediately raise the alert status to the highest level.
The eruption followed an earlier warning issued by Indonesia’s Geological Agency on the evening of May 18, citing a high likelihood of a major eruption. Residents were advised to avoid areas within a 6-kilometer radius of the crater and to wear masks to protect themselves from volcanic ash in the air. Authorities also warned of potential lahars — dangerous volcanic mudflows — especially if heavy rains occur around the volcano.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, standing at 1,584 meters, is situated in a region known for tourism. A previous eruption on Sunday had already sent ash plumes as high as 6 kilometers, raising concerns among locals and visitors. Officials are now closely monitoring the situation around the clock.
