Iceland volcano erupts dramatically again, with streams of lava reaching the town’s defensive walls.
A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted Wednesday for the fifth time since December, spewing massive lava flows that threaten to cut off the town of Grindavík and prompting the evacuation of the famous Blue Lagoon. Dramatic footage showed fountains of red-hot lava shooting into the air along a 3.4-kilometer (two-mile) fissure near Mount Hagafell on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Iceland’s Meteorological Office stated that “scientists estimate this eruption is more vigorous than previous ones in the area.”
The eruption began around 1 p.m. local time on Wednesday following an earthquake at the Sundhnúks crater, according to Iceland’s public broadcaster RUV. The Met Office had previously warned of a likely eruption due to “intense seismic activity” and magma build-up in the crater’s underground reservoir. Lava flows have severed two of the three roads leading to the fishing town of Grindavík and are advancing along a defensive barrier designed to protect the town and key infrastructure, the Met Office reported. Authorities cautioned that Grindavík risks becoming completely isolated, although the barriers are currently holding. Grindavík, home to about 3,000 people, was mostly evacuated before a previous eruption in December. Remaining residents and responders are urged to leave while possible, though police told RUV that three residents refuse to evacuate.
Electricity to Grindavík was cut on Wednesday as a precaution, as lava flows neared high-voltage lines and underground hot and cold pipes, Kristinn Harðarsonar, production manager at energy company HS Orka, told RUV. Benedikt Ófeigsson from Iceland’s Met Office noted that this eruption was more powerful than previous ones due to increased accumulated magma. Iceland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on X that there were no disruptions to international or domestic flights. However, the Blue Lagoon, a renowned geothermal spa and tourist attraction, was evacuated for the third time in just over two months, according to its operations manager. Located less than an hour’s drive from Reykjavik, the Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most popular tourist destinations. The site is part of the Reykjanes Peninsula, characterised by a rift valley, lava fields, and cones, making it one of the most active volcanic regions in the world.
