The Maldives has announced it will prohibit Israeli passport holders from entering the country amid the conflict involving Hamas in Gaza. According to a press release issued by the presidential office of the Indian Ocean island nation, renowned for its luxurious resorts and pristine white sand beaches, Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu decided to implement the ban following a recommendation from the cabinet.
The president’s office stated that amendments to the country’s laws would be made, and a cabinet subcommittee would be formed to supervise the implementation of these measures. After learning of the ban, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised Israelis to refrain from travelling to the island. They also suggested that Israeli citizens currently in the country consider leaving, as it would be challenging for Israeli authorities to provide assistance in case of any difficulties.
The president revealed his decision to appoint a special envoy to evaluate Palestinian needs and announced the establishment of a fundraiser aimed at supporting Palestine with UNRWA, as per the release. Additionally, Muizzu intends to organise a nationwide rally under the banner “Falastheenaa Eku Dhivehin,” translating to “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine.” This announcement follows closely on the heels of the president’s condemnation of an Israeli airstrike on a displaced camp in Rafah, which resulted in the deaths of at least 45 Palestinians and left over 200 injured. “Alongside the government and people of Maldives, I urge for an immediate ceasefire, cessation of violence, and unimpeded humanitarian access,” the president stated on X last week.
