A tragic incident occurred as one passenger died and 71 others were injured when severe turbulence struck their Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore on Tuesday. The turbulence violently tossed passengers and crew, leading to an emergency landing in Bangkok. The Boeing 777-300ER was about 10 hours into its flight, conducting meal service when it encountered turbulence over Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Basin. Inside the aircraft, significant damage was evident, with smashed overhead compartments and emergency oxygen masks deployed. Images showed parts of the ceiling exposed and various items strewn across the floor. The General Manager of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Kittipong Kittikachorn, stated that a 73-year-old British man, identified as Geoff Kitchen, died, likely due to a heart condition.
The Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital in Bangkok treated at least 71 injured passengers, with six in critical condition, including citizens from various countries. Kittipong Kittikachorn inspected the aircraft and noted some passengers had broken arms. The flight, with 211 passengers and 18 crew, departed London’s Heathrow Airport for Singapore’s Changi Airport but diverted to Bangkok, landing at 3:45 p.m. local time. Video footage shows emergency responders carrying an injured passenger on a stretcher from the aircraft after the diversion. Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong assured that the airline is assisting passengers and families. Singapore’s Ministry of Transport is investigating flight SQ321, with support from the US National Transportation Safety Board.
Turbulence occurs when planes encounter varying air currents. Light to moderate turbulence may cause pressure against seatbelts and cabin items to shift. Severe turbulence can result in passengers being thrown around, causing injuries or fatalities. The airline reported extreme turbulence over Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Basin, leading to a medical emergency declaration and diversion to Bangkok. Flight data indicates rapid altitude changes. According to CNN Weather, the flight likely encountered severe turbulence due to rapidly developing thunderstorms over southern Myanmar on Tuesday. These storms, common at this time, form quickly in the afternoon due to land heating, despite initially not showing on radar.’
Approximately 65,000 aircraft experience moderate turbulence annually in the US, with around 5,500 encountering severe turbulence. These figures, however, are projected to increase due to the impact of the climate crisis on turbulence, as noted by an atmospheric science professor at the University of Reading in the UK.A September 2022 study predicts a substantial rise in global clear-air turbulence by 2050-2080. In March 2023, a former White House official died in violent movements on a private jet, unrelated to weather. Furthermore, in July 2023, seven individuals sustained injuries on a Hawaiian Airlines flight bound for Sydney, Australia, due to severe turbulence. The flight operator expressed its “deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. We deeply apologise for the traumatic experience that our passengers and crew members suffered on this flight.” Boeing has said it is in touch with the Singaporean carrier and is “ready to support them.” The manufacturer is deferring further questions to the airline and local authorities.
