Six people, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, are missing, and one person has died after a tornado sank a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily.
On Monday, rescuers searched for six people, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who went missing after a tornado struck a luxury yacht, sinking it off Sicily’s coast and killing one of the 22 on board. The yacht, anchored about half a mile from Porticello, was hit by the tornado around 5 a.m., according to Italy’s Coast Guard. Among the missing are four Britons and two Americans. A source confirmed to CNN that Lynch, founder of software giant Autonomy, was on board. Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, were rescued, with one child airlifted to Palermo’s children’s hospital. Eight were hospitalised, and one body was found on the yacht’s hull. A small waterspout, a type of tornado, formed over the area Monday morning, according to the European Severe Weather Database. Other severe storms in Sicily on Sunday night brought over 4 inches (100 mm) of rain in under four hours in Brolo, east of Palermo.
The weather forecast had warned of strong winds and storms across southern Italy on Sunday, according to a Coast Guard spokesperson. The 56-metre British-flagged yacht, “Bayesian,” carried mostly British passengers, along with two Anglo-French, one Irish, and one Sri Lankan. New Zealand confirmed two of its citizens were involved but are not missing. The nationality of the deceased remains undisclosed. Italian fire brigade divers reached the yacht’s hull, 49 metres (160 feet) below sea level, and helicopters were assisting in the search. A nearby boat’s captain reported turning on his engine to avoid colliding with the Bayesian during the storm. The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is sending four inspectors to Palermo for a preliminary assessment.
British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch went missing when a tornado sank the yacht early Monday. More than that, his former co-defendant, Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car just days before Lynch’s yacht sank off Sicily. Chamberlain was struck while running on Saturday, according to his lawyer. Both Lynch and Chamberlain were acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco court in June, following charges linked to the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion. He was acquitted of fraud in June. Lynch turned Cambridge University research into Autonomy, Britain’s largest software company and a FTSE 100 member. Maritime records show the yacht is owned by Isle of Man-registered Revtom Limited, with Bacares listed as the owner.
