Eight people were killed in a landslide at landfill in Uganda’s capital.
A landslide at a landfill in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, has resulted in the deaths of eight people, city authorities confirmed on Saturday. The incident took place late on Friday after heavy rainfall caused parts of the landfill to collapse, burying nearby houses, according to local media reports. Rescue operations by government officials and Red Cross teams are ongoing, with 14 people rescued so far. Kampala Capital City Authority is overseeing the search efforts as they continue to look for any additional survivors amidst the debris. The disaster has raised concerns about the safety of landfill sites in the area, particularly during the rainy season.
“Tragically, eight people—six adults and two children—have been found dead so far, and the rescue operation is still ongoing,” the authority announced on its X account. The Kiteezi landfill, which has served as Kampala’s primary rubbish dump for decades, has gradually transformed into a large hill. For years, residents have voiced concerns about the hazardous waste from the site, warning that it pollutes the environment and poses significant risks to the local population. The recent landslide has intensified these worries, highlighting the ongoing dangers associated with the landfill, particularly after heavy rainfall.
Footage from NTV Uganda showed people walking across a section of the landfill that had collapsed onto parts of a house, while images from UBC Uganda depicted an excavator trying to clear the debris. Recent heavy rainfall in Uganda has caused flooding and landslides, but this is the first incident with reported fatalities.
