The test featured the Alef Model Zero, a lightweight prototype developed for research purposes. It achieved a smooth vertical takeoff (VTOL) and gracefully flew over another car — marking the first-ever documented flight of a real car taking off vertically without any external tethering.
The breakthrough is turning heads, not just for the technology but also because Alef is a startup, not a tech giant. CEO Jim Dukhovny explained on LinkedIn that the team prioritized safety and IP protection, holding back public demonstrations until they were confident it was safe for consumers. The all-electric vehicle features a gimbaled cabin to ensure stability mid-air and an elevon system for full vertical and horizontal control — all while keeping its propellers safely enclosed. It also includes obstacle avoidance, glide landing capabilities, and a ballistic parachute. It is the first vehicle of its kind to receive FAA Special Airworthiness Certification in the U.S.
The production model, Alef Model A, will be road-legal with a driving range of around 200 miles and a flight range of 110 miles. Looking ahead, Alef plans to launch the Model Z in 2035 — a four-seater flying sedan with autonomous flight capabilities and a projected flight range of 200 miles. According to Alef, the flying car will use less energy per trip than a Tesla.
With this successful test, Alef has brought the world one giant leap closer to the dream of flying cars becoming part of everyday life.
