The Vice President of Malawi died in a plane crash along with nine other passengers.
Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine other passengers have tragically lost their lives in a plane crash, as announced by the country’s President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday. The plane went missing when it failed to land at Mzuzu International Airport, which is approximately 380 km (240 miles) north of the capital, Lilongwe. President Chakwera informed the nation that the wreckage of the aircraft has been located. “I deeply regret to inform you that the search and rescue operation for the missing plane carrying our vice president and nine others has concluded. The plane has been found, and it is a devastating tragedy,” Chakwera stated. He revealed that the plane was discovered “completely destroyed” near a hill in Chikangawa Forest in northern Malawi, expressing profound sorrow at the heartbreaking event.
Chakwera honoured his deputy, describing him as “a kind individual, a dedicated family man and spouse, and a patriotic citizen who served his country with excellence.” “His passing is an immense loss to his wife, Mary, his family, his friends, his fellow cabinet members, and to all of us as a nation,” Chakwera expressed in his statement from Malawi’s capital. He also expressed grief for the other passengers who were on board. The Malawian leader emphasised the tragic circumstances of the incident, revealing to reporters that he had previously flown on the same plane. On Monday evening, the president informed journalists that air traffic control had advised against the vice president’s plane attempting to land, suggesting a return to the capital due to poor visibility. Shortly after, contact with the aircraft was lost, prompting a search operation.
The Malawi Defence Force deployed drones and 200 soldiers to search for the crashed plane in Chikangawa Forest. Rescue operations faced delays due to bad weather, as mentioned by Force Commander Paul Valentino Phiri. President Chakwera confirmed a dignified funeral for the vice president and the other victims, whose remains arrived in the capital on Tuesday evening. Malawi will observe a 21-day national mourning period from June 11 to July 1 for Chilima and the officials lost in the crash. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed sadness and solidarity with Malawi. Chilima, an economist who had led Airtel Malawi, served as deputy to former President Peter Mutharika and then as vice president from 2020. President Chakwera praised his service, and Chilima is survived by his wife Mary and two children.
