A Russian deputy defence minister has been removed from his position following his arrest on charges of corruption.
Amid Russia’s highest-profile corruption scandal since the Ukraine invasion, a deputy defence minister faces bribery charges. Timur Ivanov allegedly accepted a 1 million ruble ($10,800) bribe, reported by Russian state media TASS. Appearing in a Moscow court donning military attire, Ivanov stands accused of receiving bribes during Defense Ministry contracts, facing up to 15 years if convicted. Held in custody until at least June 23, his lawyer seeks house arrest. Dismissed from his defence ministry position, the scandal expands with two others detained following Ivanov’s arrest.
Alexander Fomin, owner of Russian construction firm Olimpsitistroy, was arrested Thursday for allegedly providing a bribe to Ivanov, stated the Moscow City Courts press service. The Basmanny Court detained him for one month and 30 days. Sergey Borodin, a businessman, was also arrested Wednesday for suspected complicity in accepting the bribe, receiving a two-month detention period, the court service reported. Ivanov, in his post since 2016, is a key figure in Russia’s Ukraine war and a close ally of Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu. Despite the arrest, he remains listed on the Defense Ministry website without reports of dismissal. The unexpected arrest may heighten pressure on Shoigu, criticised for his handling of the Ukraine invasion, particularly by the late Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin. Despite challenges, Putin has retained Shoigu.
Known for his extravagant lifestyle, Russian deputy defence minister Ivanov faced scrutiny from Alexey Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation (ACF). ACF’s Maria Pevchikh claimed Ivanov’s Defense Ministry position became immensely profitable due to the Ukraine invasion. While Ivanov faced EU and US sanctions post-invasion, his ex-wife, Svetlana Maniovich, continues to enjoy opulence in Europe, indulging in yachting and skiing. ACF’s investigation, based on 8,000 leaked emails, unveiled Maniovich’s lavish spending. Notably, she reportedly splurged over $100,000 at a renowned Paris jewellery store amidst the Mariupol siege tightening.
