Russia carries out its most extensive airstrikes on Ukraine in weeks.
Overnight into Wednesday (8 May), Russian forces conducted a “massive” missile attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, as reported by local authorities. This marks the most significant aerial assault by Russian forces in weeks. According to Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk, Russia deployed 76 air attack weapons, comprising 55 missiles and 21 drones launched from Russian and Russian-controlled areas. Oleshchuk further noted the destruction of at least 59 weapons overnight. The targets of the attacks included power generation and transmission facilities in Ukraine’s Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Vinnytsia regions, as disclosed by the country’s Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko on Telegram.
Local authorities reported at least three injuries, including a woman and a man with multiple limb injuries and shrapnel wounds, transported to a hospital in the Kyiv region. Additionally, an 8-year-old child in the Kirovohrad region was injured. Moscow has intensified its efforts to disrupt Ukraine’s energy system in recent weeks, particularly as Kyiv’s troops face challenges in maintaining positions along key frontlines, notably in the east. The five-month wait before US Congress approved $61 billion in military aid to Kyiv may have caused lasting damage that will be felt on the frontlines for months to come.
The most recent Russian assault targeted three thermal power plants operated by Ukraine’s largest power company, DTEK. This marks the fifth instance of its infrastructure being attacked within a month and a half. Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s state-owned grid operator, also reported “damage to generation facilities.” Maksym Kozytskyi, a regional military official, stated that two critical energy infrastructure facilities in the Lviv region were attacked—one in the Chervonohrad district and another in the Stryi district. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that “all necessary services are already working to mitigate the consequences of Russian terror,” and emphasised the importance of global recognition, stating, “The world must not give a chance to new Nazism,” in a post on X. These assaults coincide with Ukraine observing the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II on Wednesday.
