Russia claims that Ukrainian troops crossed into its territory and launched a ‘massive attack.’
Russia has accused Ukrainian troops of crossing into its Kursk region, marking the first such incursion and escalating pressure on Moscow in a previously unaffected area. Russian authorities, including the Ministry of Defense, claimed Ukrainian forces launched a “massive attack” on Tuesday, attempting to breach defences near the Kursk-Sumy border. President Vladimir Putin called the incursion a “large-scale provocation,” accusing Kyiv of indiscriminate attacks on civilian buildings. Ukrainian authorities have not commented, and CNN cannot verify the claims. The extent of the attack and whether Ukrainian troops remain on Russian territory are unclear. Reports indicate the incursion occurred near the town of Sudzha, close to the border.
The Russian Ministry of Health reported that 31 people, including six children, were injured by Ukrainian shelling in the Kursk region. Geolocated videos do not show Ukrainian troops in the town, and CNN cannot confirm the account, but footage shows heavy shelling in Sudzha. Drone footage shows around 20 men surrendering at the border, though their identities are unconfirmed. An unofficial Ukrainian channel claimed the video showed 22 Russian soldiers surrendering. Aleksey Smirnov, acting governor of Kursk, declared an emergency from August 7th due to a difficult border situation, stating that about 300 Ukrainian troops attacked Russian positions, but the advance was stopped. Smirnov noted several thousand people left the area in the past 24 hours. The Russian National Guard has increased security at the Kursk nuclear power plant, 50 kilometres north of the clashes.
Ukrainian troops face increased pressure along the 600-mile frontline as Moscow’s slow offensive continues, potentially to redirect Russian resources. News of a successful incursion could boost morale in Kyiv. Russian blogger Rybar claimed Ukrainian forces captured a crucial gas transit station near the border, but CNN cannot confirm this. Despite EU sanctions, some Russian gas still flows through Ukraine. If confirmed, the attack would be significant but with limited immediate impact. Pro-Ukrainian sabotage groups have crossed into Russia before without major damage. The Institute for the Study of War geolocated footage of damaged armoured vehicles near the border but could not confirm their origin. Russian forces are advancing towards Pokrovsk, threatening a key Ukrainian supply line, and claim to have seized New York and are nearing Toretsk.
