Victoria Starmer, the UK’s new ‘first lady’, is a former lawyer who has transitioned into a career in public health.
The British public has elected a new government, and with that, a new family will be moving into 10 Downing Street. Unlike in some other countries, such as the United States, when a new British prime minister assumes office, the transition into both the new role and home happens almost immediately. This means that not only will Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, be settling into his residence near the Houses of Parliament, but his wife Victoria and their two teenage children will also be moving in. So, who is Victoria Starmer, and what do we know about the new occupants of 10 Downing Street? Starmer’s wife, whom he usually refers to as Vic, maintained a relatively low profile during the election campaign.
Both trained as lawyers, Keir and Victoria Starmer married in 2007, a year before he became Director of Public Prosecutions. Their relationship began with an unlikely meeting at work. Starmer, then a barrister, demanded to speak to the lawyer who had drafted some documents. That lawyer was Victoria. After their conversation, she exclaimed, “Who the bleep does he think he is?” and hung up on him. Starmer pursued her for months, and they have been together ever since. “Vic is beautiful, she is grounded, we share values and we laugh together,” Starmer said. Victoria, whose parents are Jewish, now works in occupational health in the NHS. Starmer told The Guardian last month that they are “very keen” for their children to understand their heritage.
The prime minister has shared his children’s concerns about the move to Downing Street, stating, “Deep down, they’re worried that this could change their lives, which is why we will fiercely protect their privacy.” Starmer refers to them as “my boy” and “my girl” in interviews to maintain their privacy. He told ITV’s “This Morning,” “We decided from the start to keep them as protected as possible, so we won’t have any photo shoots with the children and we don’t name them in public.” Starmer told The Guardian he is “acutely aware” of how his job impacts his family, saying, “These are formative years. We keep life as ordinary and unchanged as possible.” Earlier this year, pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated outside the family’s home, unfurling a banner and leaving rows of children’s shoes. The Starmers’ main hope for their children, he told “This Morning,” is for them to be “happy and confident.” He admitted that a move to Downing Street might increase their children to ramp up a campaign for a dog.
