Saudi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA Airlines) has launched an innovative product called “ProtecTasbih,” the world’s first sanitizing prayer beads. This innovation aims to address health and safety concerns for pilgrims traveling to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, where the largest human gatherings in the world occur. Such crowds increase the risk of infectious disease transmission. According to the World Health Organization, over 60% of pilgrims fall ill during or after their journey and often carry infections back to their home countries, with the “Hajj Cough” posing a particularly high risk to elderly pilgrims.
Understanding that every pilgrim carries prayer beads (Tasbih) to count 33 or 99 prayers, the team developed sanitizing prayer beads that combine faith with hygiene technology. The beads contain an antibacterial semi-solid compound infused with tea tree oil extract. When the beads are rubbed, the antibacterial agent is released to kill germs immediately. The beads are effective for up to two weeks, covering the duration of the pilgrimage, and once the antibacterial compound is used up, the inner beads can still be used, minimizing waste as they are made from 100% recyclable materials.
The distribution and trial of ProtecTasbih began at SAUDIA’s airports and flights, with over 65,000 beads given out on flights from various cities worldwide to Jeddah. Additional distributions took place in Mecca through contactless vending machines and metro stations to reach a wider pilgrim population. This innovation has received positive feedback from religious leaders and public health experts, marking a significant step forward in preventing infectious disease spread among pilgrims.
