Bodies discovered in Mexico have been identified as those of missing American and Australian tourists, Mexico files its initial charge.
Mexican authorities confirmed on Sunday that three bodies, discovered with gunshot wounds to the head and dumped in a well, are those of missing tourists, including a US citizen. The Baja California Attorney General’s office stated that relatives of American Jack Carter Rhoad and Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson were able to identify their bodies without genetic tests. Additionally, three Mexican citizens previously questioned regarding their disappearance have been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, according to the attorney general’s office. One of the suspects, identified as Jesús Gerardo “N,” also known as “El Kekas,” is among those detained.
The accused has been charged with forced disappearance in connection with the case involving the three tourists, whose bodies were discovered last week discarded in a 50-foot well with gunshot wounds to the head. Brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their friend Jack Carter Rhoad disappeared during a surfing trip near Ensenada, approximately 60 miles south of the border city of Tijuana. Mexican authorities suspect that between the afternoon of April 27 and the following morning, several individuals approached the surfers with the intention of stealing their vehicle.
While drug cartel violence is common in Baja California, it seldom occurs in tourist areas like Ensenada. Last week, protesters in Ensenada demanded action against violence affecting both tourists and locals. Drug cartels, fueled by US drug demand and armed with weapons from across the border, have brought increasing violence to Mexico. Despite Mexico’s status as a tourist destination, violent crimes such as kidnapping and human trafficking persist, especially in border areas. With one of the world’s highest homicide rates and over 100,000 people missing, Mexico struggles with criminal impunity, as only around seven percent of murders result in convictions.
