The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reported that at least 22 people were killed in a strike on civilians sheltering in southern Gaza on Friday. The strike hit tents of displaced individuals in the town of Mawasi, designated as a humanitarian zone by the Israeli military. As Israel intensifies its operations in nearby Rafah against Hamas, a Red Cross field hospital received 22 bodies and 45 injured after the strike. The Palestine Red Crescent Society blames Israel for the attack, while the Gaza Ministry of Health reported 25 deaths and 50 injuries. CNN cannot confirm these figures. The Israeli military is reviewing the incident but initially found “no indication” it was responsible.
According to the ICRC, one of its facilities was damaged in the strike. In a post on X, the ICRC did not assign blame for the strike but stated, “The ICRC office – surrounded by hundreds of displaced civilians living in tents – was damaged by nearby shelling in Gaza. Firing so close to humanitarian structures endangers civilians and humanitarians.” The ICRC reported that “heavy-calibre projectiles” landed within metres of the facility and noted that this incident was one of several recent occurrences where stray bullets hit ICRC structures. The ICRC emphasised that parties to the conflict are obligated to take “all feasible precautions to avoid harm to civilians.”
Tens of thousands have fled to Mawasi as Israeli operations expand in Rafah. Recent Israeli advances west and north of Rafah have met significant resistance from Hamas fighters. PRCS spokesman Raed al-Nims told CNN that the Israeli army is targeting supposed safe areas in Mawasi, Khan Younis, and Rafah. The PRCS reported severe conditions in Rafah, with inaccessible casualties on roads and in camps. Mohammed Al-Mughair, a Civil Defence official, said central and western Rafah have been under fire since Friday, with Israeli forces about one kilometre from the coast. The Israeli military confirmed ongoing targeted operations in Rafah. Additionally, the closure of the Rafah crossing from Egypt and insecurity near the Kerem Shalom crossing have led to severe humanitarian aid shortages.
