UN agency reports at least 30 dead following dam collapse in Sudan.
At least 30 people have died after the collapse of the Arba’at Dam in Sudan’s northwest Red Sea State, according to the United Nations emergency relief agency, with hundreds more feared missing, Reuters reported. Flash floods devastated 20 villages and damaged another 50 following the dam’s collapse on Sunday, severely affecting an estimated 50,000 people, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). In the villages of Khor-Baraka and Tukar, residents were forced to flee for safety, and OCHA warned that the final death toll could rise significantly.
Footage from Agence France-Presse (AFP) shows industrial trucks buried in mud and debris, some still loaded with crates and personal belongings, while other vehicles are almost unrecognisable along the silty riverbank. Moussa Mohamad Moussa, a resident living near the dam, described in an AFP video how “the dam broke, and the water swept away around 40 people.” Another resident, Ali Issa, shared that he helped rescue families, elderly people, and children trapped in their cars as floodwaters rose. “We came to check out the situation, but we couldn’t reach the Arba’at Dam due to the overwhelming water,” he said. According to OCHA, initial reports suggest that torrential rains caused the dam to breach, leading to the complete draining of the reservoir behind it.
The dam, which supplies water to Port Sudan, has intensified the humanitarian crisis in Red Sea State. OCHA warns that the damage will worsen the situation, already dire due to over a year of civil war. Sudan’s Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Haitham Muhammad Ibrahim, has promised emergency aid and resources for evacuation. On Monday, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council, visited Tokhar, which was hit by storms but not the dam collapse. The region around the dam, home to nearly 240,000 displaced people, is receiving aid from OCHA and partners like UNICEF and WASH Cluster.
