สำนักงานของอดีตประธานาธิบดี โจ ไบเดน เปิดเผยเมื่อวันอาทิตย์ว่า ไบเดนได้รับการวินิจฉัยว่าเป็น มะเร็งต่อมลูกหมากระยะลุกลามไปยังกระดูก ซึ่งเป็นชนิดที่รุนแรง โดยตรวจพบเมื่อวันศุกร์ที่ผ่านมา หลังเข้าพบแพทย์จากอาการผิดปกติในการปัสสาวะ
“เมื่อสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา อดีตประธานาธิบดีไบเดนเข้ารับการตรวจร่างกายและพบก้อนเนื้องอกที่ต่อมลูกหมาก ต่อมาได้รับการวินิจฉัยว่าเป็นมะเร็งต่อมลูกหมากชนิดรุนแรง พร้อมพบว่ามีการแพร่กระจายไปยังกระดูก แม้จะเป็นชนิดรุนแรง แต่มะเร็งตอบสนองต่อฮอร์โมน ซึ่งช่วยให้สามารถบริหารจัดการและรักษาได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ” คำแถลงจากสำนักงานไบเดน
ภายหลังการเปิดเผยข่าวนี้ อดีตผู้นำสหรัฐฯ ได้รับกำลังใจจากหลายฝ่าย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นอดีตประธานาธิบดีโดนัลด์ ทรัมป์ ซึ่งโพสต์ข้อความแสดงความเสียใจและส่งความปรารถนาดีถึงครอบครัวไบเดน รวมถึงอดีตรองประธานาธิบดีกมลา แฮร์ริส และอดีตประธานาธิบดีบารัก โอบามา ซึ่งกล่าวยกย่องไบเดนว่าเป็นนักสู้ที่เคยทุ่มเทให้กับการวิจัยโรคมะเร็งมาโดยตลอด
ด้านผู้เชี่ยวชาญอย่าง ดร.วิลเลียม ดาฮุต แห่งสมาคมมะเร็งอเมริกัน ให้ข้อมูลว่าโดยทั่วไปแล้ว มะเร็งที่ลุกลามไปยังกระดูกไม่สามารถรักษาให้หายขาดได้ แต่ผู้ป่วยมักตอบสนองต่อการรักษาในระยะเริ่มต้นและสามารถมีชีวิตอยู่ได้นานหลายปี โดยวิธีการรักษาหลักมักเป็นการใช้ฮอร์โมนบำบัดเพื่อลดการเติบโตของเซลล์มะเร็ง

Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, according to a statement released by his office on Sunday. The diagnosis was made last Friday after Biden visited his doctor due to ongoing urinary issues.
“Last week, former President Biden underwent a medical examination after experiencing increased urinary symptoms. Doctors discovered a nodule in the prostate, and further tests confirmed that it was a high-grade form of prostate cancer, with a Gleason score of 9, and that it had metastasized to the bones. Fortunately, the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which means it can still be managed with appropriate treatment,” the statement said.
The news has prompted well-wishes from both political allies and former rivals. Former President Donald Trump sent condolences and best wishes to the Biden family. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Barack Obama also expressed their support, with Obama describing Biden as a strong and determined fighter who has always been dedicated to cancer research.
Experts say that while bone metastasis usually indicates an incurable stage, many patients respond well to treatment. Dr. William Dahut of the American Cancer Society explained that hormone therapy can help control the disease and improve quality of life. Many patients live for years after such a diagnosis.
Biden has long been involved in the fight against cancer, especially after the loss of his eldest son, Beau Biden, to brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46.
