Former Honduran President sentenced to 45 years in prison for drug trafficking charges
Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández has been sentenced to 45 years in prison and fined $8 million by a US judge for drug trafficking offences. Hernández has consistently denied the charges, maintaining his innocence and claiming he was “wrongly and unjustly accused” during his sentencing on Wednesday. In March, a New York jury found Hernández guilty on three drug trafficking charges following a two-week trial in Manhattan federal court. Despite the verdict, he has continued to deny the accusations.
He was extradited from Honduras after the US Department of Justice charged him with three drug-trafficking and firearms-related offences in 2022. Prosecutors accused Hernández of collaborating with drug cartels to transport over 400 tons of cocaine through Honduras to the United States during his time in office. In return, prosecutors alleged, Hernández received millions of dollars in bribes, which he used to bolster his political career in Honduras.
Hernández served as President of Honduras from 2014 to 2022. During his time in office, he “protected and enriched the drug traffickers in his inner circle,” according to the Justice Department. They noted that he used his executive power to support the extradition of certain drug traffickers to the US if they “threatened his grip on power,” while promising protection to those who paid him and followed his directives. Prosecutors further alleged that the conspiracy Hernández was involved in relied on the Honduran National Police to safeguard cocaine shipments as they moved through the country. In a statement, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said Hernández “abused his position as president of Honduras to operate the country as a narco-state, allowing violent drug traffickers to operate with virtual impunity, causing suffering for the people of Honduras and the United States.”
