New evacuation alert issued as Greek wildfire threat persists.
A new evacuation alert was issued Tuesday for Nea Makri as wildfires continue to threaten Athens’ suburbs. One person was found dead in Vrilissia, and thousands have been evacuated with homes, businesses, and schools at risk. Although the thick smoke over Athens cleared by Tuesday morning, the air remains hazy. Helicopters resumed flights after being grounded overnight, and ash has been reported across the city. Firefighters are now focusing on hotspots rather than a single fire front, with multiple blazes still active, particularly around Marathon and Penteli. Fire service spokesman Col Vassilios Vathrakogiannis warned that conditions for new fires remain dangerous throughout the week. Over 700 firefighters, 199 engines, and 35 aircraft have been battling the fires, which started on Sunday, about 35 km north of Athens.
Officials reported that fires erupted in 40 different locations on Monday, with flames reaching heights of up to 25m (82ft) in some areas. In an unprecedented scene, people in Athens wore face masks to shield themselves from the smoke that blew into the city. Greece’s National Observatory said satellite images showed that by noon local time (10:00 BST) on Monday, the fire had already consumed around 100,000 acres (405 sq km; 156 sq miles) of land. In the wooded, hilly region of Penteli, three hospitals were evacuated, and at one point, a site of the National Observatory was feared to be at risk. The blaze also engulfed a timber factory, and explosions, likely from fuel tanks and gas cylinders, were heard in the area. Despite the danger, some Penteli residents stayed near their homes, attempting to extinguish small fires with hoses or tree branches.
European nations have pledged aid to Greece after the government activated the EU’s mutual civil protection mechanism. Italy is sending two planes, France and Serbia one helicopter each, and Spain, the Czech Republic, and Romania are providing additional vehicles, personnel, and aid. Turkey will also send two planes and a helicopter. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen affirmed EU support for Greece’s battle against the fires. Greece has faced its hottest June and July on record, with climate change exacerbating the risk of wildfires. The world has warmed by about 1.1°C since the industrial era, with temperatures expected to rise further unless significant emission reductions are made.
