As Britain announces to expel Russian espionage, they call upon the Russian ambassador, take aim at Moscow-owned residences, and accuse five individuals of spying.
The United Kingdom has called in the Russian ambassador and unveiled a series of new actions against Moscow. Among them is the targeting of Russian-owned properties alleged to have been utilised for intelligence activities, according to the British government. On Wednesday, UK Interior Minister James Cleverly announced the expulsion of the Russian defence attaché, identified by the Foreign Office as “an undeclared military intelligence officer.” Additionally, the measures entail stripping special diplomatic status from multiple “Russian-owned properties” suspected of serving intelligence purposes, as per government assertions.
Among those properties are a structure situated in Highgate, located in north London, and Seacox Heath, an estate in the Sussex countryside in southern England, owned by the Russian government. Cleverly indicated that these actions follow the charging of five Bulgarian nationals “in connection with an investigation into alleged offences under the National Security Act, as part of a counterterrorism policing investigation.” These alleged offences pertain to a suspected arson attack on a business linked to Ukraine in the UK. British prosecutors have confirmed that these charges “relate to alleged hostile activity in the UK in order to benefit a foreign state, namely Russia,” Cleverly stated.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, it has faced numerous sanctions from the UK and other Western nations. Despite President Vladimir Putin’s attempts to downplay their impact, the UK’s Foreign Secretary David Cameron sees the latest measures as sending a clear message to Russia. Moscow has retaliated in the past with sanctions on Western individuals. As the UK announces new sanctions, British officials anticipate Russia’s usual response of accusations and conspiracy theories, but vow not to be swayed by such tactics.
