Italy prohibits puppy yoga sessions due to welfare concerns.
Italy’s Ministry of Health has prohibited the trendy practice of “puppy yoga” over worries about potential exploitation and mistreatment of the puppies involved. Typically, these sessions integrate puppies into yoga classes, allowing them to roam freely or be incorporated into poses. Giovanni Leonardi, who leads the One Health department at Italy’s health ministry, declared on Tuesday that incorporating dogs into exercise sessions falls under Italy’s Animal Assisted Interventions act. Consequently, only adult dogs are now permitted in yoga sessions to safeguard the animals’ health and well-being, as well as the safety of participants.
The decision follows an investigation in March by the prominent Italian news program “Striscia la Notizia,” which asserted that puppies suffered mistreatment in various yoga centres, being confined to pens between sessions. In response to these allegations, the Animal rights organisation Lega Nazionale per la Difesa del Cane (National League for the Defense of Dogs) lodged a complaint with the Italian health ministry, contending that the puppies were treated “as if they were mere gymnastics equipment.” LNDC alleged that the puppies, often as young as 42 days old, were transported in boxes or plastic bags, subjected to prolonged hours across multiple sessions, and deprived of water and food under the guise of “preventing accidents in the gym.”
Piera Rosati, President of LNDC, condemned puppy yoga as a profit-driven exploitation, highlighting its disregard for the fragile well-being of animals. She stressed that at such a tender age, puppies require a nurturing environment under their mother’s guidance to develop proper socialisation and confidence. Elisa Allen, Vice President of Programs and Operations at PETA UK, lauded Italy’s ban on puppy yoga, describing it as a deceptive tactic promoting unhealthy dog breeding practices. She urged yoga enthusiasts to reject this harmful trend, emphasising the importance of ahimsa, or non-harming, in yoga philosophy.
