India searches for survivors after landslides in Kerala claim over 150 lives.
Rescue operations continued in Kerala on Wednesday after heavy monsoon rains triggered deadly landslides that swept through homes and left hundreds stranded. The death toll has surpassed 150, with many drowning, and is expected to rise following at least two landslides in the northeastern Wayanad district early Tuesday. Rescue workers are contending with challenging conditions, including heavy rain, power outages, destroyed bridges, and blocked roads due to fallen trees, as they attempt to reach survivors and assess the full extent of the disaster.
Emergency responders at the landslide site, buried under mud and toppled trees, were seen carrying bodies in tarps and assisting residents to safety as rain continued to pour. The Indian Army’s southern command reported on X Wednesday that up to 1,000 people have been rescued so far. Dr. Manoj Narayanan, the medical superintendent at Moopen’s Medical College Hospital in Meppadi, told CNN that patients started arriving at the hospital around 3 a.m. local time on Tuesday. The hospital had received about 100 patients, with around 10 already dead on arrival. He noted that some victims were difficult to identify due to the severity of their injuries.
Narayanan reported that many people still need rescue, including in a village of 400 households that remains “inaccessible,” with bodies being recovered from the debris. CNN Weather noted Kerala received widespread rainfall of 150 mm (6 inches) to nearly 250 mm (10 inches) in some areas over 24 hours. Recent flooding and mudslides have caused hundreds of deaths, displaced millions, and damaged infrastructure across South Asia, with scientists linking the severity to the climate crisis. China has also faced severe rain, floods, and landslides. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed distress over the Wayanad landslides, offering condolences and announcing financial aid of about $2,400 for the deceased’s families and $600 for the injured.
