Filmmaker Payal Kapadia made history at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious Grand Prix. Her film, “All We Imagine As Light,” follows two Malayali nurses in Mumbai, marking the first Indian entry in Cannes’ main competition in thirty years. Kapadia expressed her gratitude and urged for more Indian representation in her acceptance speech. The victory has sparked widespread celebration across the country, with prominent politicians joining the chorus of acclaim on social media. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Kapadia’s “historic feat,” highlighting her talent as a symbol of India’s rich creativity. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also congratulated Kapadia and Anasuya Sengupta, the first Indian actor to win Best Actress at Cannes. Gandhi celebrated their achievements as groundbreaking and inspiring for the Indian film industry.

Some observers have highlighted the film’s portrayal of the romance between the main characters, Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and her Muslim boyfriend (Hridhu Haroon), as notably daring, especially amidst India’s increasing religious polarisation.
India, renowned for its prolific film industry, often falls short of Hollywood in international recognition and major awards. Last year, “RRR,” a Telugu-language historical fantasy, made history as India’s first film to win an Oscar for Best Original Song with “Naatu Naatu.” Indian filmmaker Kartiki Gonsalves’ “The Elephant Whisperers” also clinched the Oscar for Best Documentary Short. In 1947, Chetan Anand’s “Neecha Nagar” secured Cannes’ top prize, making him India’s sole winner of the accolade. Kapadia, previously honoured at Cannes in 2021 for “A Night of Knowing Nothing,” explores complex relationships across caste divides in India.
