Rescuers in Gaza worked urgently to extract victims from the rubble on Sunday after Israeli airstrikes hit two school buildings, killing at least 30 people, according to the Palestinian Civil Defense. The strikes marked a continuation of a violent weekend following a similar attack on Saturday. Mahmoud Basal, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Defense, told CNN that most of the recovered bodies on Sunday were women and children. Rescue efforts are ongoing in the hope that some survivors remain trapped beneath the collapsed buildings, which had been used as shelters for displaced families. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency have claimed responsibility for the strike, stating they targeted “terrorists operating inside Hamas command and control centres” that were “embedded” within the schools.
The IDF did not respond to CNN’s inquiries about the number of Hamas members and civilians killed in the strike, or whether civilians were given advance warning. Videos from the area, obtained by CNN, show significant destruction and dead bodies in a schoolyard following the Israeli airstrike. The footage shows medics and rescuers transporting injured children to ambulances. According to a local journalist, three floors of the northern wing of Al-Nasr School were destroyed, as was the ground floor of the nearby Hassan Salama School. Both schools, located in a densely populated residential area, were sheltering hundreds of displaced people, primarily women and children.
Palestinian officials told CNN that Israel did not issue any warnings to civilians before the airstrikes. “If a warning had been given, the number of deaths would have been lower,” Basal said. Sunday’s strike follows previous attacks on Al-Huda and Al-Hamama schools, which were also targeting alleged Hamas infrastructure, according to the IDF. Those strikes resulted in at least 17 deaths on Saturday. In that instance, Basal noted, “the first bombing was unexpected and caused numerous casualties. While rescuers were retrieving the victims, occupation forces issued a warning of an impending second strike.” The death toll from Israeli military action in Gaza since October 7 reached 39,583 on Sunday, with 91,398 people injured, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. This military action was initiated following Hamas attacks that killed around 1,200 people.
