Israel will not be invited to this year’s peace ceremony commemorating the 1945 atomic bombing of Nagasaki to maintain a “peaceful and sombre atmosphere” at the August 9 event, the city’s mayor told local media on Wednesday. This decision contrasts with Hiroshima, where authorities told CNN last month they had no intention of retracting Israel’s invitation to their peace event, despite calls for the country to be excluded. Both cities faced pressure from activists and bomb survivor groups to exclude Israel due to its actions in Gaza, where tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed since Israel began targeting militant group Hamas following the October 7 attack. Nagasaki’s mayor, Shiro Suzuki, informed reporters on Wednesday that Israel’s exclusion was due to security concerns and not a political decision.
This arrangement differs from Hiroshima, the first city hit with an atomic bomb during WWII, leading to Japan’s surrender. Every year, diplomats attend peace ceremonies in both cities, reflecting on peace and nuclear dangers. Hiroshima’s ceremony is larger, with representatives from 115 countries and the EU attending this year. The 1945 atomic bombs killed tens of thousands, both instantly and later from radiation sickness. On X, Israel’s Ambassador to Japan, Gilad Cohen, called Nagasaki’s decision “regrettable,” saying it “sends a wrong message to the world.” Israel rejects accusations of breaking international humanitarian law, arguing its war is against Hamas, not Palestinians.
The ceremony in Nagasaki will be held at the city’s Peace Park on August 9, marking the day the US dropped the second atomic bomb on Japan, three days after Hiroshima. Nagasaki officials previously showed reluctance to host Israel. In June, Mayor Suzuki called for a Gaza ceasefire and put Israel’s invitation on hold due to protest risks. On Wednesday, Suzuki said the risk had not lessened. Hiroshima does not share these concerns and plans to invite Israel, despite excluding Russia and Belarus for security reasons. Both countries have been excluded since 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Some activists accuse Hiroshima of double standards for excluding Russia and Belarus but allowing Israel to participate.
