Iran sentences a celebrated director to eight years in prison and flogging, according to the director’s lawyer.
According to Mohammad Rasoulof’s lawyer, Babak Paknia, a court in Iran has declared an eight-year prison sentence and flogging for the acclaimed movie director on charges related to national security. Paknia stated on the social media platform X that the court deemed Rasoulof’s films and documentaries as instances of conspiring to commit crimes against the country’s security. Additionally, Paknia mentioned that the court issued an unspecified fine and ordered the confiscation of Rasoulof’s property.
Rasoulof, acclaimed for There Is No Evil (2020) winning a Golden Bear at Berlinale 2020, and A Man of Integrity(2017) honoured at Cannes 2017, is set to premiere The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024) at Cannes next week. Ahead of the release, alleged government pressure surfaced, with actors facing interrogation and travel bans, as per his lawyer’s X post. Some were reportedly coerced to urge Rasoulof to withdraw the film. It’s uncertain if he can attend Cannes, the lawyer stated. This casts a shadow over the filmmaker’s journey, raising concerns about artistic freedom amidst state control in Iran’s cinematic landscape.
According to Human Rights Watch, in 2022, an Iranian court sentenced Rasoulof to one year in prison and a two-year ban on filmmaking for “propaganda against the system.” This marked another instance of Iranian authorities targeting him for his work, with multiple arrests and passport confiscations noted by HRW. The Independent Filmmaker Association of Iran issued a statement condemning the recent sentence imposed on the director. They asserted that Mohammad Rasoulof’s verdict highlights the judiciary’s bias and vengeful nature within a legal system tainted by governmental influence. The association emphasised solidarity with Rasoulof and all artists who challenge government censorship, denouncing the judiciary’s unjust ruling.
