In his first major move since taking office on June 4, President Lee Jae-myung’s administration announced this afternoon the suspension of propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts along the border with North Korea. The move fulfills a campaign promise to rebuild trust and promote peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The decision comes after a year of rising tensions between the two Koreas. South Korea had resumed the broadcasts in June 2024 in response to North Korea sending balloons filled with trash and propaganda across the border. The loudspeakers transmitted news from both Koreas and abroad, as well as content on democracy and life in the South—material that Pyongyang has long viewed as provocative and had previously threatened to destroy the speakers over.
Under the previous administration, which took a hardline stance on Pyongyang, inter-Korean relations had steadily deteriorated. In contrast, President Lee pledged during his campaign to reopen dialogue, restore communication channels, including the severed military hotline, and push both sides to end provocative acts and manage tensions through stability. His ultimate goal is a nuclear-free peninsula.
While residents living near the border welcomed the silence after enduring loudspeaker broadcasts for months, some human rights groups voiced concern. They argue that suspending the broadcasts could cut off a rare source of outside information for North Koreans.
Reports note that North Korea has stopped sending trash balloons, and the suspension is not permanent—the broadcasts could resume if the situation worsens.
Still, this move marks a hopeful first step toward lasting peace on a peninsula technically still at war, with no formal peace treaty in place since the Korean War armistice in 1953.
