North Korea claims to have deployed 250 new tactical ballistic missile launchers towards its border with South Korea, marking a new aggressive move by leader Kim Jong Un. Photographs from state media show vehicle-mounted launchers and military trucks, with Kim overseeing an elaborate ceremony that included cheers and fireworks. Kim stated that the launchers, built with North Korean technology, represent the first phase of expanding the country’s missile forces. He warned of severe consequences if the US continues to threaten regional security.
The North-South Korean border is one of the most militarised globally, with Pyongyang claiming significant artillery aimed south. Sunday’s display in Pyongyang comes amid increased tensions and a new military alliance with Russia. While photos show numerous missile launchers and trucks, it’s unclear if any missiles were functional at the event. Joseph Dempsey from the International Institute for Strategic Studies noted that it’s unlikely missiles were loaded, due to practicality and safety concerns. The launchers appear similar to those for the Hwasong-11D, a short-range missile North Korea says can carry a tactical nuclear warhead. However, it is uncertain if North Korea can produce enough missiles or warheads for such a claim.
Late last year, Pyongyang warned of deploying new military hardware along the demarcation line with South Korea after Seoul partially withdrew from a 2018 agreement meant to ease border tensions. The goodwill from the agreement has dissipated, and both countries have now formally abandoned it. Kim, dissatisfied with the lack of concessions from the US and South Korea after 2018, has intensified North Korea’s ballistic missile program, aiming to match the nuclear deterrent of Washington. In response, the US, South Korea, and Japan have increased military cooperation through exercises and deployments, which Pyongyang views as a threat. Since May, there have been at least three instances of South Korea firing warning shots after North Korean military personnel crossed the demarcation line in the Demilitarised Zone.
