Chinese warplane fired flares, put Australian Navy helicopter in danger
Australia accused a Chinese fighter jet of releasing flares near a naval helicopter over the Yellow Sea last weekend, calling the action “completely unacceptable,” stated Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The Australian MH-60R Seahawk helicopter was on a UN sanctions enforcement patrol, endangering its crew, said the Defence Ministry. Chinese authorities defended their actions, accusing Australia of deliberate provocations. The Australian helicopter, deployed from HMAS Hobart, patrolled international waters of the Yellow Sea for Operation Argos, enforcing UN sanctions on North Korea. Prime Minister Albanese denounced China’s actions as clearly unacceptable, emphasising diplomatic protests and likening the incident to a recent South China Sea.
The event resembled a previous incident in late October, where a Chinese fighter jet fired flares at a Canadian military helicopter flying over the South China Sea. “The risk to a helicopter in that scenario includes flares damaging rotor blades or engines, deemed both unsafe and unprofessional,” stated Maj. Rob Millen of HMCS Ottawa in an October accident. At that time, China defended its actions, accusing Canada of malicious behaviour. Australian opposition leader Peter Dutton urged Prime Minister Albanese to contact President Xi Jinping regarding the incident and other encounters. Dutton emphasised the potential for a tragic miscalculation due to ongoing provocations.
Previous tense and potentially hazardous episodes between Australia and China include a November encounter near Japan, where Australia alleged a Chinese warship harassed Australian Navy divers using sonar waves, causing minor injuries. Australian Navy Vice Adm. Mark Hammond raised the issue in a meeting with Chinese navy Adm. Hu Zhongming, emphasising the importance of personnel safety. In June 2022, a Chinese fighter jet released flares and chaff into the engines of an Australian P-8A flying over the South China Sea. China has denied wrongdoing in all incidents, asserting adherence to international law.
