วันอังคาร (21 พฤษภาคม) เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการพิจารณาคดีครั้งที่สองจากทั้งหมด 3 คดีที่จัดขึ้นในเมืองสตุ๊ตการ์ท แฟรงก์เฟิร์ต และมิวนิก ซึ่งถือเป็นคดีต่อต้านการก่อการร้ายที่ใหญ่ที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งในประวัติศาสตร์เยอรมันสมัยใหม่ คดีนี้แบ่งออกเป็นการพิจารณาคดีสามคดีเนื่องจากข้อจำกัดด้านลอจิสติกส์ โดยมีจำเลยทั้งหมด 27 คน นอกจากกรรมการทั้งห้าคนแล้ว ยังมีตัวสำรองสองคนที่พร้อมสำหรับการพิจารณาคดีที่แฟรงค์เฟิร์ต ในกรณีที่ขาดงานเป็นเวลานาน การรักษาความปลอดภัยในสถานที่จะมีเจ้าหน้าที่ประมาณ 45 นาย โดยมีพยานประมาณ 260 คนเรียกมา มัลแซค-วินเคอมันน์ อดีตสมาชิกสภานิติบัญญัติจากพรรคทางเลือกเพื่อเยอรมนี (AfD) ที่เป็นฝ่ายขวาจัด ถูกกล่าวหาว่านำจำเลยร่วมหลายคนไปสอดแนมอาคารรัฐสภา

German prince facing trial for allegedly orchestrating coup plot.
A nobleman suspected of conspiring to overthrow the German government stood trial on Tuesday, marking the commencement of a significant legal proceeding shedding light on an alleged far-right scheme to seize control of the country’s legislative body. Heinrich XIII Prince Reuss stands accused of spearheading the scheme, which aimed to install him as Germany’s head of state. The prince appeared before a specially fortified courtroom in Frankfurt alongside eight co-defendants, among them former judge Birgit Malsack-Winkemann, purportedly poised to assume the role of minister of justice. In total, nine alleged ringleaders of treason stand accused of orchestrating a plot to revive the German Reich through violent means, including storming the Bundestag, the nation’s parliamentary institution, and abducting President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Tuesday (May 21) marks the start of the second of three trials held in Stuttgart, Frankfurt, and Munich, constituting one of the largest anti-terrorism cases in modern German history. Split into three trials due to logistical constraints, this case involves a total of 27 defendants. In addition to the five judges, two substitutes stand ready for the Frankfurt trial in case of prolonged absence. Security on-site will be ensured by approximately 45 officers, with around 260 witnesses summoned. Malsack-Winkemann, a former lawmaker from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, allegedly led several co-defendants in scouting the Reichstag building.
Among the defendants are former army officers Maximilian Eder and Ruediger von Pescatore, who, as per a statement from the Hesse higher regional court, purportedly harboured “a profound antipathy towards German state institutions and the democratic framework.” The conspiracy by the alleged terrorist organisation to overthrow the German government and institute martial law came to light in 2022. According to the charges, the group had been plotting to replace the government with a council resembling a cabinet and a military faction since August 2021. The conspirators reportedly amassed nearly $550,000 in funds and had access to a substantial arsenal, as indicated by the Public Prosecutor.
