Rescue worker dies as floods in southern Germany force thousands to evacuate
A firefighter tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue trapped residents as severe flooding, caused by heavy rain, forced several thousand people to evacuate their homes in southern Germany. The 42-year-old firefighter was part of a rescue mission when the boat he was in, carrying three other firefighters, capsized late Saturday night. Despite the immediate rescue efforts, his body was not recovered until early Sunday morning. A spokesperson for the Bavarian town of Pfaffenbach an der Ilm, located approximately 50 km (30 miles) north of Munich, confirmed the incident and expressed condolences. The flooding has caused significant disruption in the region, highlighting the dangers faced by emergency responders during such natural disasters.
Despite having several days to prepare for the flooding, approximately 3,000 people had to be evacuated in southern Germany as rising water isolated some areas, authorities reported. “We owe our thanks and respect to the rescue workers and helpers who are battling the consequences of the floods in many places,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on X. Scholz is set to visit the region on Monday. According to a government spokesperson, he will meet with Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Bavaria’s premier in the mid-morning local time to assess the situation firsthand.
Economy Minister and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, during a visit on Sunday, pledged support for the flood-affected regions and emphasised that climate change is driving more severe weather events. “Natural disasters have always been a part of human history. What we are now witnessing is a significant increase in the frequency of these events. Record floods occur every few years, as do record rainfall events,” Habeck, a member of the Greens Party, told broadcaster n-tv. In 2021, parts of Europe experienced major flooding that resulted in nearly 200 deaths, with Germany being the hardest hit. The disaster was largely attributed to the effects of climate change, leading to calls for enhanced warning and safety measures.
