The leaders and their deputies of the organisation supervising Indonesia’s upcoming new capital have unexpectedly stepped down, casting doubt on the $32 billion initiative. Facing overcrowding, extensive traffic congestion, chronic flooding, and sinking land in Jakarta, the current capital with a population of 10 million, Indonesia is constructing a new capital named Nusantara in the jungles of East Kalimantan in Borneo Island, shared with Malaysia. State Secretariat Minister Pratikno announced on Monday that the President has appointed the acting head and deputy head, who will temporarily serve as the public works and housing minister and deputy agrarian minister, respectively.
He stated that these appointments would accelerate construction and that the resignations had been under discussion for some time. On his official Instagram account, President Joko Widodo of Indonesia reassured the public on Monday that the development of the project would proceed as planned. “The development of the new capital will continue in alignment with the established shared vision,” he affirmed. The government has been working rapidly to construct the necessary infrastructure for relocating the initial group of 12,000 civil servants by this September. However, the plan has faced two delays, and the resignations come amid a lack of private funding for President Widodo’s flagship project.
“The key question now is how to reassure investors that everything is on track,” commented Arya Fernandes, an analyst at Indonesia’s Centre for Strategic and International Studies.” One significant obstacle has been the uncertainty surrounding land ownership at the site of the new capital, according to Public Works Minister Basuki Hadimuljono during Monday’s press briefing. “We are committed to expediting the process, whether through sale, rental, or collaboration between the government and private entities, to dispel any concerns investors may have,” he stated. President Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, is scheduled to visit Nusantara on Tuesday to inaugurate several projects, including schools. Independence Day celebrations for Indonesia on August 17 are also planned at the new capital. Jokowi will conclude his presidency in October after completing the maximum two terms in office. President-elect Prabowo Subianto, who is closely aligned with Jokowi, has pledged to continue the development of the new capital.
