Israeli airstrikes in Gaza City on Saturday led to 52 fatalities or missing persons, according to the Hamas-controlled Government Media Office (GMO). Al Ahli Baptist Hospital received 38 bodies, while 14 individuals remain trapped under collapsed buildings. Video footage from the affected areas shows extensive destruction and numerous casualties. The Civil Defence Directorate reported people still buried under rubble after strikes hit residential areas near the Baths cemetery in Al Tuffah and Al Shati neighbourhoods. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated their fighter jets targeted “Hamas military infrastructure” in Gaza City, without specifying exact locations. A medical rescue worker described the strike in Al Shati as feeling like an “earthquake.” This follows a previous incident where the International Committee of the Red Cross reported at least 22 civilians killed in a strike on a southern Gaza shelter.
The airstrike hit tents housing displaced people in Mawasi, a Palestinian town designated as a humanitarian zone by the Israeli military. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reported damage to its nearby office from shelling on Friday, emphasising the danger to civilians and humanitarian workers near such structures. “Heavy-calibre projectiles” landed close to the ICRC facility, with 22 fatalities and 45 injured treated at the Red Cross field hospital. The IDF stated on Saturday that they were investigating the incident and denied targeting the Red Cross facility directly. Meanwhile, Israel intensified its operations in Rafah as part of efforts to dismantle Hamas in Gaza.
On Saturday, the Israeli military dropped leaflets featuring the names and photos of hostages over various locations in the Gaza Strip, including Al-Zeitoun, Al-Sabra, and Khan Younis. The leaflets, which displayed different hostages in each area, showed a total of 62 hostages. CNN identified six hostages on the flyers who had previously been declared dead by Israel, including four taken in the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack and two Israeli soldiers believed to be deceased. The reason for including photos of these hostages is unclear, and the IDF did not immediately comment. The IDF stated that the flyers were part of efforts to gather intelligence and secure the hostages’ return. An Israeli security official said the families were notified in advance and that the photo selection was based on undisclosed considerations.
