Kim Ki Nam, a loyal North Korean official who faithfully served all three generations of its leaders, bolstering their political legitimacy and directing the state’s propaganda machinery, has passed away, according to official media reports on Wednesday. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a solemn visit to Kim Ki Nam’s bier at 2 a.m. on Wednesday, expressing profound sorrow for the loss of a seasoned revolutionary who maintained unwavering loyalty to the country until his last breath. Kim Ki Nam passed away on Tuesday at the age of 94, as announced by the official KCNA news agency.
He belonged to a dedicated cadre of officials committed to upholding the legitimacy of the three successive Kim generations, which traced back to the revolutionary founder of the state in 1945. “Kim Ki Nam was devoting himself to advancing the triumphant path of constructing a robust socialist nation, he steadfastly pursued vigorous progress and innovation in all areas of the Party’s ideological endeavours in the new era,” KCNA stated. Kim Ki Nam stands out as one of the rare North Korean officials to venture into South Korea, leading a delegation for a funeral in 2009 following the passing of President Kim Dae-jung, who ushered in a period of reconciliation with Pyongyang through his “Sunshine Policy.”
Ascending within North Korea’s propaganda apparatus, Kim Ki Nam assumed the role of deputy head in 1966 and later chief in 1985 during the tenure of state founder Kim Il Sung, as documented by South Korean government records. His tenure spanned until 2017, marking a significant period of influence. According to insights from North Korea analyst Michael Madden at the Stimson Centre, Kim Ki Nam wielded considerable sway over policy and personnel, playing a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of the ruling Workers’ Party. His close relationship with Kim Jong-il, the deceased father of the current leader, was notable, with Madden suggesting they were even “drinking buddies,” as per his sources.
