David Beckham, appointed as charity ambassador for The King’s Foundation, bonded with King Charles over their shared interest in beekeeping.
An announcement from The King’s Foundation revealed that “We are pleased to announce that David Beckham has joined as an ambassador for The King’s Foundation.” Soccer icon David Beckham shared beekeeping tips with King Charles when they met before Beckham was named ambassador for The King’s Foundation. The meeting took place at Highgrove Gardens in the Cotswolds, England, where Beckham also interacted with students of the King’s Foundation, who practise skills like woodworking and embroidery in specialised workshops. “It was inspiring to hear from The King about the work of His Majesty’s Foundation during my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens – and compare beekeeping tips,” Beckham said in a press release from the foundation.
The former soccer star has previously spoken publicly about his passion for beekeeping. The 2023 Netflix documentary series “Beckham” even opens with him harvesting honey into an old jam jar. As part of his role with The King’s Foundation, Beckham aims to raise awareness of the charity’s mission. Initially known as The Prince’s Foundation, The King’s Foundation was formed in 2018 by merging several of Charles’ charitable projects into one organisation. According to its website, the foundation “provides holistic solutions to challenges facing the world today” and offers education and training programs in fields such as traditional arts, architecture, design, science, engineering, horticulture, wellbeing, and hospitality.
Throughout the years, Beckham has maintained strong connections with the royal family. He attended the weddings of both Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011 and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. In 2003, he was honoured with the Officer of the Order of the British Empire title (OBE) by the late Queen Elizabeth II and had multiple encounters with her thereafter, including at the Young Leaders awards ceremony in June 2018. Following the queen’s passing in September 2022, Beckham demonstrated his respect by waiting in line with the public for 12 hours to pay his respects.
