Netanyahu calls Israeli strike that killed 45 at a camp for displaced Palestinians in Rafah a ‘tragic mistake’
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Monday that an airstrike killing dozens at a camp for displaced Palestinians in Rafah, Gaza, was a “tragic mistake.” He announced an investigation during his Knesset speech. The Gaza Health Ministry reported at least 45 deaths and over 200 injuries, mostly women and children. Rafah hospitals were overwhelmed. The strike followed Hamas launching rockets at Tel Aviv, with the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) intercepting several and destroying the launchers used by Hamas. A US official informed CNN on Monday that Israel had notified the Biden administration it used a precision munition to target a location in Rafah. However, the explosion ignited a nearby fuel tank, causing a fire that engulfed a camp for displaced Palestinians and resulted in dozens of deaths.
The Israeli military stated on Monday that it struck “a compound in Rafah where significant Hamas terrorists were operating,” killing two officials, Yassin Rabia and Khaled Nagar. CNN cannot verify these claims. This was among the deadliest strikes on Gaza’s southernmost city since Israel began its operation on May 7. It followed an International Court of Justice (ICJ) order for Israel to “immediately halt” its Rafah operations. The IDF believed there would be “no expected harm to uninvolved civilians.” Over 36,000 people have died in Gaza since the operation began, following Hamas-led militants’ October 7 attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 people and resulted in 250 hostages. Witness Abu Nidal Al Attar reported seeing strikes and finding burned victims. Hamas called the attack “a horrific war crime” and “a terrible massacre.”
International condemnation was swift. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the airstrike, saying, “This horror must stop.” Doctors Without Borders (MSF) called it horrifying, and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) described Gaza as “hell on earth.” Egypt condemned the strike and urged Israel to comply with the ICJ ruling and its responsibilities as an occupying power. As a mediator, Egypt will host indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Qatar also criticised the strike, warning it could hinder ongoing negotiations and called it a “serious violation of international law.”
Before Israel launched its operations in Rafah, over a million Palestinians sought refuge there, fleeing from other parts of Gaza due to Israel’s military campaign. While Israel claims to have instructed civilians to evacuate certain areas, many remained in what were designated as “safe zones.” According to UN figures, more than 800,000 individuals have fled Rafah since May 6. Despite international outrage and a US warning, Israel has vowed to continue its operations in Rafah. In response to the ICJ ruling, Israel stated it will not conduct military actions in Rafah that could endanger the civilian population in Gaza.
