Belarus strengthens its military presence along its borders with Ukraine following drone interceptions.
Belarus deployed military reinforcements to its border with Ukraine on Saturday after several Ukrainian drones, which the country’s air defences intercepted on Friday, crossed its airspace, according to Belarusian Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, in a separate briefing, described the drones as “attack drones” and labelled the incident “a provocation.” He stated that the Belarusian general staff had been instructed to take necessary measures to secure the state. Lukashenko further claimed that the Ukrainian actions demonstrate a lack of readiness for peace and an intent to escalate tensions, referencing a recent Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory.
Khrenin told journalists that, given the situation in Ukraine and the Kursk region of Russia, Lukashenko has ordered an enhancement of troop deployments in the Gomel and Mozyr areas near the Ukrainian border to address Ukrainian “provocations.” He noted that special operations forces, ground troops, and rocket units, including the ‘Polonez’ systems and ‘Iskander’ ballistic missile complexes, have been deployed to these areas. Additionally, air defence, rocket defence, and aviation assets have been bolstered. On Saturday, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine’s Charge d’Affaires and issued a “strong protest” regarding the incident. The ministry warned that if such provocations continue, Belarus reserves the right to take retaliatory measures to protect its territory and might reconsider the need for the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in Minsk.
The ministry accused Ukraine of “criminal actions” intended to “escalate the situation and expand the conflict zone in our region,” urging Europe not to worsen the situation. Ukraine has not yet commented on the accusations. The ministry warned that if the conflict spreads, it could impact the entire region, including EU countries, with no winners. Belarusian state media BelTA reported that the Foreign Ministry will seek consultations with allies, partners, and international organisations in response to the incident.
