Belgium withdraws from the mixed triathlon and Switzerland adjusts its line-up after athletes fall ill following the race in the Seine River.
Belgium has withdrawn from the mixed relay triathlon, and Switzerland has adjusted its team after athletes from both countries fell ill following last week’s races. Belgium’s Claire Michel fell ill after swimming in the Seine River during the women’s triathlon, leading to the withdrawal. The Belgian National Olympic Committee criticised the organisers for not providing clear competition details. Switzerland replaced Adrien Briffod, who had a gastrointestinal infection, with Simon Westermann. The Swiss Olympic Chief Medical Officer is unsure if the infection is linked to the Seine’s water quality. Paris 2024 organisers confirmed the water quality was “very good” on the day of the individual triathlons.
Despite the illnesses, World Triathlon and Paris 2024 confirmed that Monday’s mixed relay triathlon will proceed as scheduled, noting that the Seine’s water quality has improved in recent hours. The individual triathlon events went ahead on Wednesday despite initial concerns over the Seine’s water quality, which led to the postponement of the men’s race by a day. Additional rain had fallen overnight, but both World Triathlon and Paris 2024 deemed the water quality sufficient for the races. Athletes trusted the organisers to ensure water safety. Swiss silver medallist Julie Derron and men’s gold medallist Alex Yee expressed confidence in the organisers’ assurances. Heavy rains the previous weekend had raised concerns about water quality, leading to two days of cancelled training. Despite this, organisers remained confident the races could proceed as planned.
The decision to hold swimming events in the Seine, historically off-limits, surprised many. Organisers invested $1.5 billion to clean the river for Paris 2024, with officials showcasing its suitability by swimming in it themselves. A new rainwater storage basin also helps manage pollution. However, water quality can fluctuate rapidly. Recent rainfall caused E. coli levels to spike, potentially jeopardising the swim segments if they exceed safety limits. The individual triathlon includes a 1.5-kilometre swim, 40K bike ride, and 10K run, while the mixed relay involves a 300-metre swim, 5.8K bike ride, and 1.8K run.
