มตา (Meta) บริษัทแม่ของเฟซบุ๊กและอินสตาแกรม ประกาศนโยบายใหม่เมื่อวันอังคารที่ 9 กรกฎาคม 2567 ว่าจะลบโพสต์ที่ใช้คำว่า “ไซโอนิสต์ (Zionist)” ร่วมกับวาทกรรมต่อต้านชาวยิวหรือการลดทอนความเป็นมนุษย์
นโยบายนี้เกิดขึ้นหลังจากบริษัทศึกษาการใช้คำดังกล่าวทั้งในแง่มุมทางประวัติศาสตร์ และการเผยแพร่ลงบนสื่อโซเชียลมีเดียเป็นเวลาหลายเดือน โดยเฉพาะในบริบทของสงครามที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่บริเวณฉนวนกาซา เมตาระบุว่าบางครั้งคำว่า “ไซโอนิสต์” ถูกใช้แทนคำว่า “ชาวยิว” หรือ “ชาวอิสราเอล” ในเชิงลบ
การตัดสินใจครั้งนี้ เกิดขึ้นหลังจากปรึกษาหารือกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญกว่า 145 คน รวมถึงนักประวัติศาสตร์ กลุ่มสิทธิพลเมือง และนักเคลื่อนไหวด้านเสรีภาพในการแสดงออก นโยบายใหม่นี้จะครอบคลุมการใช้คำว่า “ไซโอนิสต์” ร่วมกับ การกล่าวหาว่าชาวยิวควบคุมโลก การเปรียบเทียบชาวยิวกับสัตว์ การเรียกร้องให้ทำร้ายชาวยิว หรือการเยาะเย้ยชาวยิวว่าเป็นโรค
เมตายังได้ขอให้คณะกรรมการกำกับดูแลอิสระของบริษัท ออกแนวทางในการจัดการกับโพสต์ที่กล่าวหากลุ่มที่ถูกเรียกด้วย “คำแทนสัญชาติ” ว่าเป็นการก่ออาชญากรรมสงคราม
การเปลี่ยนแปลงนโยบายนี้สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความพยายามของเมตาในการสร้างสมดุลระหว่างการคุ้มครองเสรีภาพในการแสดงออก และการต่อต้านการใช้คำพูดเพื่อสร้างความเกลียดชัง (Hate speech) และการต่อต้านชาวยิวบนแพลตฟอร์มของบริษัท

Meta Revises Policy on Handling the Term “Zionist” on Social Media Platforms
Meta, the headquarters company of Facebook and Instagram, announced a new policy on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, stating that it will remove posts using the term “Zionist” in conjunction with anti-Semitic rhetoric or dehumanizing discourse.
This policy emerges after months of company research into the historical usage of the term and its dissemination on social media, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip. Meta noted that the term “Zionist” is sometimes used as a negative substitute for “Jew” or “Israeli”.
The decision follows consultations with over 145 experts, including historians, civil rights groups, and free speech advocates. The new policy will cover the use of “Zionist” in connection with accusations of Jewish world control, comparisons of Jews to animals, calls for harm against Jews, or mockery of Jews for having a disease.
Meta has also requested its independent oversight board to provide guidelines on managing posts that accuse groups referred to by “proxy terms for nationality” of committing war crimes.
This policy change reflects Meta’s effort to balance the protection of freedom of expression with combating hate speech and anti-Semitism on its platforms.
