Germany detains assistant to far-right MEP over alleged espionage for China.
German authorities have arrested an aide to a high-ranking far-right European Parliament member on suspicion of spying for China. The individual, identified as German national Jian G and working for AfD MEP Maximilian Krah, was detained by Saxony State police in Dresden. He allegedly shared information on “negotiations and decisions in the European Parliament” with China in January. The aide’s arrest follows recent espionage-related incidents in Germany and the UK. The European Parliament has suspended him. This development underscores escalating worries about Chinese espionage activities in Europe.
“The employee, Jian G., linked to a Chinese secret service, has worked for a German Member of the European Parliament since 2019,” stated the prosecutor’s office. “During January 2024, he shared information about European Parliament negotiations and surveilled Chinese opposition figures in Germany for the intelligence service.” German media quickly identified Krah as the employing lawmaker. Krah, aged 47, holds roles in the Committee on International Trade, subcommittees on human rights and Security and Defence, and the delegation for relations with the United States. Interior minister Nancy Faeser condemned the potential attack on European democracy, criticising the AfD lawmaker for employing Jian G.
AfD’s co-chairwoman, Alice Weidel, stressed her party’s gravity toward the espionage allegations. Tino Chrupalla, the other co-chair, announced Krah’s impending arrival in Berlin for a meeting with party leadership on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, underlining the need to await conclusions pending the prosecutor’s investigation. In a separate development, three Germans were arrested for suspected breaches of the Foreign Trade and Payments Act on behalf of China. They allegedly facilitated the acquisition and export of a specialised laser without authorisation. China denounced the arrests as “hype” aimed at undermining Sino-European cooperation. Additionally, the UK charged two men with breaching the Official Secrets Act for China.
