Ship attacked by Houthi rebels believed to have sunk in the Red Sea.
A Greek-owned coal carrier appears to have capsized in the Red Sea days after being struck by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, according to a report by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The MV Tutor is believed to be the second ship sunk by the Houthis since March, following the downing of the British-registered vessel Rubymar by ballistic missiles fired from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen. The rebels have launched numerous missile and drone attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since Israel’s invasion of Gaza, which followed the Hamas-led attacks on October 7. Tensions have since escalated across the Middle East, with regional actors condemning the humanitarian crisis resulting from over eight months of Israeli bombardment of Gaza.
Israel launched its military offensive in October after Hamas-led militants from Gaza killed at least 1,200 people and abducted over 250 others. Israeli attacks in Gaza have since killed at least 37,396 Palestinians and injured another 85,523, according to the Ministry of Health there. The MV Tutor was initially hit on June 12 by a smaller boat and then struck again by “an unknown airborne projectile,” according to the UKMTO. One crew member was reported missing after the attack, US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated last week. After the ship’s entire crew was evacuated, it began to drift and reportedly sank on Tuesday, the UKMTO reported.
A Houthi spokesperson previously claimed the ship was attacked by a sea drone, ballistic missiles, and other drones for violating their so-called “ban on the occupied Palestinian ports.” The Houthi-run news outlet Al Masirah acknowledged foreign media reports about the sinking on Tuesday. Meanwhile, CENTCOM stated on X, “The Houthis claim to be acting on behalf of Palestinians in Gaza, yet they are targeting and threatening the lives of third-country nationals who have nothing to do with the conflict in Gaza. The ongoing threat to international commerce caused by the Houthis makes it harder to deliver much-needed assistance to the people of Yemen as well as Gaza.” Earlier this month, CENTCOM launched attacks on Houthi radars that facilitated the group’s ongoing assaults on ships in the Red Sea, according to US Central Command.
