Thirteen policemen were beaten to death in Sirajganj, where nine others died and two lawmakers’ homes were set on fire. In Dhaka, at least 11 people, including two students and a ruling party leader, were killed in clashes. India’s foreign ministry advised against travel to Bangladesh. Two construction workers were killed, and 30 injured in Munshiganj during clashes between protesters, police, and ruling party activists. In Pabna, at least three people were killed, and 50 injured in clashes between protesters and Awami League activists. Four garment factories were set on fire in Ashulia, Dhaka.
The government shut down high-speed internet services for the second time during the protests. Facebook and WhatsApp were inaccessible. Authorities instructed telecom providers to disable 4G, effectively cutting off internet services, according to a confidential government memo seen by Reuters. Last month, at least 150 people were killed and thousands injured in violence sparked by student protests against government job quotas. The protests paused after the Supreme Court eliminated most quotas, but students resumed sporadic demonstrations last week, demanding justice for the victims’ families. On Saturday, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman instructed his officers to ensure the security of lives, properties, and important state installations, according to a statement.
